Circular No 143

Newsletter for past alumni of The Abbey School, Mt. St. Benedict, Trinidad and Tobago, W.I.
Caracas, 31 of July 2004. Circular No. 143
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Friends,
Here is a compendium of emails that I have received from Ricardo Figuera. I hope that soon Pablo would make a try at sending us some news for you to enjoy, Fr. Bernard would be most proud of him. No luck with Isaias Farcheg´s lines, which were expected for this issue. Maybe he is preparing a long story. Cheer up!, he keeps a long FW list with the events here in Venezuela.

nice talking to you the other day. Re photos attached in file 1e5, circular 140. #1 is Christopher Webster (a day boy) , #2 Fr. Gregory, # 3 Brian Bishop ( I think from B.G.) and # 4 myself. It must have been in Form IV (1957) or Form V (1958).
Best regards,

Enclosed picture is not Class 1958, but Class 1961 in 1955 or 1956 maybe. As Csaba says, my brother Pablo is number 21 but 27 is not Michael Herrera but Roberto Savorgnan. Number 16 is Lawrence Scott.

Dear Ladislao
On this picture I can only recognise some of the participants and they are the following: 1. Christian Goddard 2. Father Agustin OSB 6. ('?) Iwaszkiewicz 13. Juan Marini 14. (') Gomes 20. ( ') Hutton (the youngest one of the 3 Huttons at MSB 21. Pablo Figuera 23. Michael Golding 27. '''looks like Michael Herrera, but I am not sure 28. Geoffrey Ames
Your best bet would be to send the picture to Pablo Figuera or Christian Goddard . They should be able to identify all the ones present.

Dear Ladislao,
I'll surely check the list of class 1958 and help you with the missing data. Do you by any chance have information on a Mount boy called Lawrence Scott? When in 1958 I was in Form V he must have been in Form III. I don't know if later he graduated at Mount or elsewhere, for we never had any contact after I left Mount in December 58. I'll appreciate your help in this matter.
Saludos y gracias por toda la información enviada.

An oldie: July 27, 1982

Trevor Soondeen
When you telephoned some six months ago, I understood you would be in Toronto on or about the time of your making a trip to Trinidad. If that were the thought I might have had a telephone call or perhaps even a visit. I understood you have a large family in Toronto that would quite easily have occupied your very limited time.

Last September I remarried. My wife Sandi and I went to Trinidad to visit with the family and fete during Carnival 1982. Sandi, who is a Canadian, was overwhelmed. She wanted to stay on, but that not being possible is anxious to return. I did not have a chance to visits the Abbey School. I was told that Phillip Nassief was in Trinidad the week before I arrived. Evidently, the political situation in Dominica is such that Philip has large business interests in Barbados where he spends a great deal of time.

Scipio Soodeen I believe has taken up residence in Barbados where his family also now resides.
Recently, I was in Clearwater, Florida helping a friend make ready for rental two condominium apartments. I realized I wasn’t too far from the Ferguson’s in Lakeland, but the repairs to the apartment took longer than anticipated.

I appreciate the time and effort you are taking to keep the clan in touch through OASIS and know the costs to you of stationery and postage. Please find enclosed my cheque for USD 10.50 as per your request.
Sincerely
Trevor

Circular No 142

Newsletter for past alumni of The Abbey School, Mt. St. Benedict, Trinidad and Tobago, W.I.
Caracas, 24 of July 2004. Circular No. 142
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Friends,
Here are the comments on Circular No. 139, I am glad someone remembers it so well and the events that accompanied it. I can remember Fr. Peter, the Priest that was in the confessional most of the time, to be very nice. By the way, if my memory serves me right, the confessional was not a booth but two chairs separated by a screen??

I am expecting Isaias Farcheg´s lines soon, he was one of the assiduous Mass goers, serving the Priest during the Mass and then making sure the wine bottle was well disposed off.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
From: "Donald Goddard"
Date: 14 Jul 21:48 (PDT)
Dear Ladislao,
As I read your description of the daily mass we had to attend during our time at Mount (1953-1958), I recall that mass didn't seem to bother me too much. What I didn't enjoy was having to go to confession once a week and invent sins. This is no joke! I recall one time when I was probably nine or ten years old, I went to one of those weekly confessions and I began to speak with that lovely Trini accent with which we spoke in those days; "Forgive me Fada for I have sinned, it does be one week since me las confession but I cyant recall anyting I did dat was bad". The priest answers me. "Well son, let me try to help you out and refresh your memory. Did you fight with anyone? Did you disobey anyone? Did you take anything that did not belong to you and did you tell any lies? Now let me hear you my son". With such great prompting, I decided to come up with some terrible sins. "Yes Fada now I does remember wat I did dat was very bad. Two days ago I pelted Urbano wid one of Broder Joseph stale hops bread and he got one ugly black eye. Yesterday I does stole some julie mangos dong de road and brother Swa caught me and pulled me ear, and four days ago I disobeyed me fada and me muda. But as far as I does recall I have not tole no lies." What was my big surprise after I felt so good that I had told all my sins, when all of a sudden he shouts at me through that little screen in his perfect Dutch accent. "You are nothing but a big liar." I replied trembling,"Why Fada does you tink so." And again I heard this loud voice from behind the little screen. "First of all I just saw Urbano and he doesn't have any black eye. Also, brother Swa as you so disrespectfully call that lovely, smelly man, has taken leave for the last two weeks and is not here. And finally your mother and father don't live here at Mount." All I could say was; "Ok Fada, you does be right. For lying to you, instead of three Hail Marys I can say a whole rosary." Quite upset by now, he finally said to me, "I make the rules here, not you and you will say not one but two rosaries, and next week you had better come back with some real sins and not such silly lies." Well to make this long story short, from that day on and after having to say two long rosaries, I became so scared of lying that I started committing real sins. The following week I truly pelted Urbano and as many Mount boys as I could pelt with the hardest stale bread I could find. Then I became the best mango thief at Mount and I ran so fast Swa could never catch me. I even stole juicy and honey from dem behives. Then I tried my best to disobey every rule at Mount. All of this, in keeping with the good Fada's advice to bring real sins to the confessional at not make up lies. He was correct, and from then on for telling the truth and not making up sins, I only got three Hail Mary's and no long rosaries. The moral of this true story is that you must commit as many sins as possible to keep our priests happy when you go to confession, but you must never lie. No, no, none of dat.

Well Ladislao, I'm quite sure that most Mount boys experienced similar situations when going to weekly confessions. If any of you deny this you does be lying because I can name many mango tiefs and stale bread pelters like myself and you all know who you does be. I won't name anyone out of respect. Please pass this on to our group to see how many will admit to the TRUTH.
Best regards to all.

Better late than never. We only just received your Christmas Bulletin “BULL”, after it made the rounds. It was very nice to hear from you. We were very sorry that we missed you all in your trip to Trinidad. I only heard you were there but was unable to catch up with you. We were in Toronto in December 1980 and visited with Margaret Ann and Ronald, was very disappointed to find that you had moved out of town, was hoping to see you all up there. I am writing you from Brazil, yes Brazil!. I parted company with Farfan and Co., things were not going so good, so I sold out to them. I got this job with a firm in Houston; it is the same firm that Michael Scott and Desmond Maingot work for. I am down here for three weeks and go home for three weeks; the money is in good old U.S. and plenty of it. I have to pass through Miami on my way in and out, it is the longest way distance wire but shortest in time (will be posting this letter from there) I have been here since February.

All is well so far, family increasing, three and three great grand. Richard has two and Barry has had his first, Michelle is just about due. As you can see from the address we are back in the Valley, changed a lot but still better than P.O.S.

How are things with you, I hope all still well, give my love to Val and the kids. Hope to hear from you soon again. So long for now and all the best.

The other day I was asked if I had the names on the photos that had numbers. Well friends it is up to you to provide the names, as I always ask, place names on the numbers, always mention the photo’s number also. Once I have enough names I shall either, take off the numbers and replace it with names or I shall publish the numbered photos with the names annexed to the photo on its lower part. I would like you to help me also with the year when the photo was taken, as sometimes the photo was not taken on the graduation year.

I do not know of any other Anthony Seheult, especially working for BWIA. Are you sure the first name was Anthony? Mac is my older brother and lives in Houston. Peter is my younger brother and he is currently working in Nigeria. His children live in Naples, Florida, and we see them frequently. As far as I know, Mac, Peter, and I were the only three Seheults at the Mount at that time. I'll search for old pictures and try and email them to you in the coming week. I am sure I have some recent ones.

Thank you for the resume and welcome. Also there was an Anthony Seheult supposed to have graduated in 1963, he is a reservation agent for BWIA. I have met him in TT, he is a friend of Graham Gonsalves of the Living Waters Group. Did you know him?. And (Mac)James Seheult who graduated with me in 1960, and currently in USA at KELCO. Please straighten this out for me!!!. There is a Peter Seheult in the list but no other information.
Yes, the years have passed, but are good to remember the good old days. Have you any information that I may use for the circular??, old photos? . Recent photos?

My wife and I just celebrated our 33rd wedding anniversary yesterday, June 18th. We are here in Tampa, with our two daughters and two of our four granddaughters. Our son Joe lives in North Carolina and also has two daughters.
Eight years ago we took a trip back to Trinidad and spent an afternoon at the Mount. We visited with Fr. Augustine who at that time was an avid cook, and gave us samples of his (famous) guava jelly. I have not had any better! His hobby was preparing jellies and jams from all the various fruits of the island. I was also in the scouts in the Parrots Patrol and I believe our patrol leader was David D'Verteuil, but can't be too sure. Hell, it's been forty years! On a personal note, did you ever play tennis? And what year did you leave the Mount? I left in 1964 to attend St. Benedict's College in Atchison, Kansas, graduating from there in 1968 with a degree in Secondary Education, and taught school and coached track and basketball in Kansas City, Kansas for seven years.

Art,
Thank you for your kind note. I'm sure that Ladislao will be thrilled to receive your package of O.A.S.I.S file info, as it'll give him years of reading matter with which to compile his stories. All the guys will benefit from it as well, so, on behalf of everyone who had been privileged to pass through the halls of MSB, thank you for preserving the memories for us.

Las, please note that Art does not intend to cash Bernard Stone's cheque, so there's no need to seek any form of reimbursement from the fellas. Bernard, thank you for offering a cheque to pay for the cost of posting all these files from Canada to Venezuela. As you will note, the cheque will not be cashed. Maybe Arthur is going to frame it - I would! But thanks anyway. The gesture was well appreciated.
Best wishes,
Nigel

Dear Nigel,
Just a little note to let you know that I received your letter re: O.A.S.I.S. and thank you for your kind words and great wishes. I had already mailed the package to Ladislao, as Val & I decided that it would be a tribute to the marvellous efforts of those who picked up the "ball" and ran with it. I hope that Ladislao has received the package, and we will not be processing the enclosed cheque.
My days at "The Mount" were and are a host of tremendous memories (especially spiritual) and it accounts for me being still here today. The great "Man" upstairs must have some plan for me yet, so here am I, still hanging in there for whatever is put on my plate. You have played a great part in my efforts for always encouraging me over the latter years of the newsletter and I thank you for that.
Keep in touch, and when we drop in to Toronto around the end of June I will give you a call so that we can get together.
In the meantime, all the very best, may The Good Lord continue to influence you.
Sincerely,
Art

Las,
I had written you about 10 days ago, advising that I have in my possession a cheque for Cdn $135.00 which was given to me by Bernard Stone, to be sent to Arthur Knaggs, to assist him with the cost of postage of the OASIS files to you. I have not sent the cheque to Arthur as yet, since I want to be certain that I'm not duplicating your effort. Please let me know, therefore, whether you have as yet sent any money to Arthur for this purpose. If you have, then I shall return this cheque to Bernard. It is my understanding that Bernard will be reimbursed for the amount of his cheque. However, I do not see any reason at all why you alone should have to fork out $135.00, and I am suggesting that you should send a note to everyone explaining that you have a need to collect a small sum of money to pay for postage of some important MSB files to Venezuela, files which will interest everyone, and ask everyone to contribute, say, $5.00 to cover the cost. Any extra money could be used to help you in your work of maintaining the Abbey School website.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Nigel
P.S. I'm sending this note to your two email addresses, in the hope that one at least will get through to you.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This exchange is about the trip that Arthur is making and the problem with the internet, that I hope I can unravel by making changes using separate servers.

Las,
I've heard from Arthur Knaggs today, and it seems I may be seeing him soon. However, he'd like to get onto your mailing list, please. His email address is av_knaggs@hotmail.com. Another old boy who would like to receive the mailings is Bernard Stone, whose email address is: nathose@aol.com.
I'll try to put together an article for you soon.
Best of everything.
Nigel

(I am sorry for the problems, but since Hotmail has a new filtering option, I am going to line up all the Hotmail addresses and send these through LadislaoKertesz@Hotmail.com, and maybe the @aol shall be sent thru Yahoo.com? Ed.)

Great to hear so fast from you.
We had dinner with Bernard & Tony on Monday before we left. How do I get to see the OASIS letters, tried TheAbbeySchool.com but they are not there, and I don’t seem to be on Lad's mailing list any more? Also Bernard was interested in reading some of the old news. Will ring you when we are back in Toronto.
Art

(Art, maybe you should get those that you are missing from Nigel, he has all of them; while I make the changes. Ed.)

Nigel, Just zipped through Toronto, on our way to Victoria, as son Edward & Michelle has just had a new baby, so we are here to change diapers and give them a break in between breast feeding etc. All else fine, need your Phone and address (home) as we will be passing through briefly at the end of July, and want to contact you as we will be there for a couple days (like two), then we drive to N.S. I also want to get the web site to read the Mount news, as Eion O’Connor said that Ladis has been putting in some of the data from Oasis. We are awed with the flowers and landscaping, as well with the unbelievable prices for homes and property here. We are just 100 yards from the beach, and as early risers we are walking the sands at 6.30 and soaking in the Pacific air (as opposed to the Atlantic). Drop us a line.

Circular No 139

Newsletter for past alumni of The Abbey School, Mt. St. Benedict, Trinidad and Tobago, W.I.
Caracas, 3 Julio 2004. Circular No. 139

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Friends,

Here I am including an account taken from memory on an event that had taken place during my time at the school. This I am including so that you may include me in the writers list.

And now <<<<

What can I say, it was a routine when I arrived in 1955 and for some of you the memories of going to Mass might recall happiness but for the majority it was no fun. The bench prefects had to keep their charge awake, no head was allowed to touch the bench top and the kneeling had to be straight, no backside was allowed to touch the seat. This drill, which some objected, did make us what we are today, I do not regret it.

In 1958 there was a change, on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, instead of going to Mass you had the choice to change Mass time for study time. In my case I was one of those that preferred study to Mass, I always had something to write or read, mostly unfinished homework. From the time I entered MSB, Prep A (I entered MSB on Sept. 1955) to Form III (1957) the routine was of going to Mass as soon as we woke up, you had 15 minutes to dress and get in the Chapel. After Mass you had again 15 minutes to get to the Refectory that was located next to the Church bells, close to the Monastery's main entrance and on the North side. The Mass lasted exactly 37 minutes!!!, joking, but I had favourite priests who took about 30 minutes and those not so favourite that took 45 minutes. No matter, those with a watch always found that time crawled. Naturally I am talking as a personal experience and the looks on the faces of those that kneeled around my location. Piece of wood plank was the surface for kneeling; not the soft kneeling stools of nowadays.

But I enjoyed the Latin of them days to the local language now days and the Gregorian singing to the rock and whatever and wherever is done today.

Maybe someone would like to add to this!!!.

Once a month I send out one copy of the OASIS news as it was published.
The OASIS lasted 14 issues so you do not need to worry, it is for the really oldies.
I send out the other three issues using your inputs and comments.
I need your help for those three as there are a lot of stories to be told.
God Bless

All right Lad but I'm a bit confused.
As per your e-mail I can see that the last communication called OASIS was made in 1982 and that's 20 years back from now.
Am I correct in my appreciation or is there any more recent com regarding this ´ old boys ´ business?
If this info is the latest we have then I might think it would be convenient for us to try to update or raise newer info.
Thanks for your interest.
I remain obliged to you whilst awaiting your comments

Hello, Ladislao
How are you and the family?
Hope everything is going your way over there.
Well i am happy to inform you that I spoke with Mr Stanley Ferguson in Lakeland, Florida. I also ask him about his brothers Duncan and Peter and his cousin Christopher. They all are still alive and living in Florida and his brother Peter became a priest and is leaving by Galveston are but has retired and will be moving to Florida to live as well.

He had been in touch with Lionel Roberts and I ask him to get in touch with him and let me know and to give him my phone #. I have also told my brother to try and get in touch with Lionel in St Petersburg.

By the way Mr Stanley is 72 years old. As soon as I get more information from them I'll pass it along. Stanley doesn't have a computer he says he leaves the old fashion way still. I told him to go on the Abbeyschool.com web if he got someone with a computer. I ask him to give me some names of old boys that he could remember and this are some of them (Johnny Camacho, David De Castro, Arthur Knaggs, The O'Connor brothers, he will give a list as he remembers later on.

Well I hope this is good news, he also told me he went from 1945 to 1951 he was one of the first students, he also remembered Father Cuthbert and Father Augustine, and of course Brother Vincent. We had a very pleasant chat.

Well I also want to thank you for the circulars I still enjoy them even thought it is from the old school 40's 50's 60's not much on the 70's any way it is good to hear from all the old boys.

God bless
Salvador Coscarart.

Some of you have asked me for information on Oldboys from the 1970++. I can only inform you that I have no outstanding communication from this segment that has not been published. Even less communication from the 1980++, interestingly no plans for the next EVENT, the Second Reunion of Oldboys.

God Bless
Ladislao
