This watercolour was on a Christmas card that came to our office.
The last time I went into this building was about 3 yrs ago.
The floor had almost gone.
If my memory is correct, Fr. Cuthbert told me it was carded to be demolished.
What a pity.

Happy New Year to all

Gioannetti,
Las
Two people are missing from this class photo ROGER TAYLOR I will send u his telephone later PAUL SHEPHERD up to 15 yrs ago he was working North Sea Scotland Drilling, used to come back to Trinidad on Holiday.
His first wife Debbie Delpino if any one knows her should be able to tell u how to find him. Someone else may be missing a Venezuelan named Elias.
Glen should be able to tell you more about him, WINK WINK.
Nigel is leaving Trinidad Next week to go to Bequai to live so I don’t know if this e-mail address will be good after that.
I think its his in-laws so u can check of the people here Glen look pretty much the same.
Nigel is as bald as BOBO.
I have seen Puggy recently and he still looks the same.
I suspect that this picture is first term Form V, as DR. "TONY" DAVID STRISSIVER was Form-master in Form IV and EARL AGUSTUS is the Teacher.
I quit mount during 2nd term Form V, which is why it can´t be later.
Contact data follows if any one can´t open the files, let me know and I'll send them in Text Format.
Las, Your database that u send weekly is confusing.
Let me know if you want lessons in how to design a Relational Database.
You should put all the contacts into Microsoft Access a defector Industry Standard.

(Thank you for the offer, I am trying to reorganize the list by year of graduation or would have graduated FromV if stayed, WHG. Ed.)

Salvador,
There was someone that was at Abbey while we were there, DAVID BURKE, unfortunately he also died in a motorcycle accident in the USA, probably more than 20 yrs ago.
Seems lots of old boys did themselves in on bikes.
He was a loner so not many would remember him.....
Two other name you did not mention.............MICHAEL & GREGORY BARCANT...........They were twins..........Glen Evelyn’s Cousins.............one class ahead of Pedro and myself......

Here is an oldie, from 1982

18 August 1982

Nowadays, abbreviation seems to be with us, so when I was in T´dad 2 years ago, I realized that Sangre Grande has became simply “Grandi-e” and now I see that in true Canadian style, they’ve caused a further change from Arthur to Art!!

I really must congratulate you on starting up from 3000 miles away – yet another effort to keep the Alma Mater alive.

A few weekends ago, I saw JOHN CAMPS- CAMPINS (or has he just become Camps? I’m not sure) in B´dos en famile – told him I would let you know I saw him. I believe he told me one of his daughters got married recently. His address in POS is c/o Printers Ltd, 25 Dundonald St.

I see SCIPIO SOODEEN from time to time. He lives in B´dos now. 2 houses East of me but has – seems to have business interests overseas as well. I told him I heard from you, his address in Rendezvous Terrace, Christ Church, B´dos.

MACK KING - Eric´s younger brother also lives over here – has in fact for years.
I don’t have his address off hand.

Did you know that TREVOR EVELYN has been living in Canada for quite some years now – Elizabeth (my wife) and I saw Trevor and his family at their very nice home in Mississauga last September.

My last old boy news is that last Sunday when I attended Mass at the very quaint church in Vierdun, St. John (one of our country parishes) I seemed to recognize, vaguely, the face and baritone voice of the officiating priest – now rather grey and like myself, has lost more hair (he lost the first bit when, as a personal witness to the incident, he was one of the five seminarians to be ordained a Deacon in 1948 and given his circular “tonsure” by Count Finbar Rayn´s assistant) FATHER JOHN MENDES (or is it Mendes), I think anyhow pronounced “Mene”.
We had a short chat; we had not seen each other since 1949, 33 years. He said he would love to be included in OASIS, his address c/o Catholic Presbytery, San Fernando, where he is a parish priest.

As to myself, we have one son Edward 20, who will commence his 3rd year at York University in Computer Science this September, our other son Martin, 18 just completed his 13th grade at St. Andrew’s Collage, Aurora, Ontario and will commence his 1st year also at York in Business Administration. Our daughter, Maureen just 13, attended Queen’s College in B´dos and will enter Form 3 in September.

I have so very much to thank God for - from what, in hindsight seems to have been a very unplanned, insecure future lacking the guidance of my father who died when I was just 13, my footsteps have been guided over the years and I thank God everyday of my life for his many blessings, spiritually and materially.

As it turned out John Gordon Lang (it was his 2nb attempt, but my first) and I secured First Grades “Oxford and Cambridge in 1949.I have always been very proud of that achievement and very grateful to God for it.

I must end here, I will look forward to further OASIS!!.

Cecil Ince.

Can any one help on the individuals, oldboys, that are mentioned in this Circular???

Caracas, 21 August 2004 No. 146
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Friends,

I have good news for you; there is a new Website for the Monastery at Mt. St. Benedict. www.paxabbey.com, it is just starting and but it is already very informative.

For those that are finding photos in your old albums, your parents albums, please use yv1aci@yahoo.com or kaviacion@cantv.com, to send them as these two sites have ample free space.
Please remember, all photos I receive I send out after I do some photoshop adjusting; numbers names and file size. So if you have sent a photo and I have not sent it out within a month, the photo might have not reached me!!!.
Since last month Yahoo has given me 100MB of mailbox space, so there are no more bottle necks as there are in Icqmail or Hortmail.
Hurry and sent those wonderful photos you have stored away for this moment in history.

Now some local buzz:

Apreciado Luciano,

Thankful you for your attention of communicating with me after so many years.
I cannot recognize to you in the photo that you send to me, not because of bad memory since always I can recognize very well, but not the names after as much time out of The Abbey School, MSB.
As I told you, I was recently in The Abbey School with Oscar Cantore and Jose Maria Costa, with whom I studied as of 1967 for a couple of years, and later Oscar went to London to finish his studies and Jose Maria came for Caracas in 1969.
From then we have maintained our friendship even though Oscar comes to Anaco (all his life) and recently we were together visiting The Abbey School and managed to talk with the priests who are there.
It was an exceptional experience to have been three of us after thirty and five years.
Nowadays we see ourselves with much frequency, as much so that past month of March, Oscar and I were of fishing in the Cinaruco, sport that enchants Oscar and I invite me to fish “Pavón”.
It sent a photo with the only two fish that manage to catch that day, and seated Oscar to you this in the boat.
A warm greeting for you and your family, and cheer me that you remember those things of kids that we used to do.
Next, when you come to Caracas you do not doubt in calling me to see us.

Estimado amigo,

I am pleased to know that after so many years the friends meet again and remember.
Attached I send you a update photo with my wife.
It is very probable that you do not remember me very well, but I if I remember the times that helped so that they initiated us with greater frequency and the times that also helped so that to us they did not continue harass me (Cachapa - Crazy Monkey - the late R and others)
Will look for photos of that time because that I have them, and soon I shall send them to you.
Greetings and on my next travels for Caracas I invite you to have lunch.

Dear Ladislao,
Here is Raymond's email address : rdevaux@attglobal.net.
Raymond is back here for the summer in Brossard, a city close to Montreal, just across the St Laurence river. I see him every other Friday nights at our mother's home for supper with my other brother Patrick and also with J.D. Miller, my brother in law another old MSB boy. They are all very well and still happy to receive the weekly circulars of the Abbey School MSB.
Arthur Knaggs was recently at J.D. Miller's home where he also met Raymond for supper.
I have some old pictures of MSB and of some of the boys when I was there during the years 1947-1953. I am sending them at the email address you give in your circulars to send pictures.
Best regards,
Alain Devaux
(Thank you for the photos, Please ask Miller to send a couple of lines and photos, I miss him. Ed.)

Allo Ladislao,
Thank you very much for your e-mail and very happy new year to you and your familly.
As I mention to you earlier on, I left Mount in 1966 and came to Montreal since. I am working for Chubb Sécurity, a world wide security company. I started in 1967 and now working as a sales representative. I was born in Martinique in 1948, came to the Mount from 1960 to 1966 and then left to Montreal. My nick name at the Mount was "Pin head"; you will see me on the class picture, standing in the middle row, completely on the left side right under the open window. On the tennis picture, I am sitting on ????? I don't remember his name????? shoulders, front row. On the scout band I am playing the drum, 2nd row left. I really like looking at this old pictures, I hope you can get a lot more. I would really enjoy getting pictures between 1960 to 1966, my good time at the Mount.
Thank you Ladislao and once more "Happy new Year".
Patrick Devaux, (Pin Head).

Dear Ladislao,
You asked questions a long time ago and most were answered by Richard Johnson, brother of Gabby and Flat Top. However, you asked also about Phillip Nassief. He is from the island of Dominica, not St. Lucia, and is a prominent businessman there. I do not know him personally but believe he now is in the hotel business.
I was married in 1980 and have one daughter Anya who is now at Western in London, Ontario. (I have been divorced about fifteen years now but my ex-wife and I are on very good terms.) I am in the dairy (ice cream) business in St. Lucia. I still look forward to your interesting and enjoyable circulars.
Could you send me the following that I have missed: 1 > 15, 20, 23, 25, 40, 42 > 46. Asking for so many circulars it occurs to me that you might sometimes need help. If you do I would be happy to help forward circulars - just send me a persons email address and the numbers he needs and I will forward them.
Best Regards, Charles Devaux.
(Please ask Don, idmitch@anguillanet.com, for the missing issues. Ed.)

Dear Ladiskao,
You do not know me since I left the Mount in 1965.
I do read all your dispatches and must congratulate you on same. Really it is a delight to see all the old pictures of the Abbey School and the old boys, and from time to time I even print some of the things you send and show it around to old boys who are my contemps.
A few weeks ago you sent a photo of yourself (I suspect) and Manuel Prada. He was a dear friend of mine at Mount and I would be interested in contacting him. Please send me his address if you have it.
In the meantime keep up the good work..
Sincerely.

Another Old letter from files 30 Jun 1982:

Better late than never. We only just received your Christmas Bulletin, after it made the rounds. It was very nice to hear from you. We were very sorry that we missed you all in your trip to Trinidad. I only heard you were there but was unable to catch up with you. We were in Toronto in December 1980 and visited with Margaret Ann and Ronald, was very disappointed to find that you had moved out of town, was hoping to see you all up there. I am writing you from Brazil, yes Brazil!. I parted company with Farfan and Co., things were not going so good, so I sold out to them. I got this job with a firm in Houston; it is the same firm that Michael Scott and Desmond Maingot work for. I am down here for three weeks and go home for three weeks; the money is in good old U.S. and plenty of it. I have to pass through Miami on my way in and out, it is the longest way distance wire but shortest in time (will be posting this letter from there) I have been here since February. All is well so far, family increasing, three and three great grand. Richard has two and Barry has had his first, Michelle is just about due. As you can see from the address we are back in the Valley, changed a lot but still better than P.O.S. How are things with you, I hope all still well, give my love to Val and the kids.
Hope to hear from you soon again.
So long for now and all the best.
Walter E. Darwent.
(Anyone knows the whereabouts of John and Desmond Maingot? Ed.)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
From my files I have DESMOND and JOHN DEVAUX. Can anyone help???
The same for the DARWENTs JOHN; PETER, ROGER and WALTER.
I hope all are well in health and available for their friends.
God Bless

Greetings and Great Hallucinations from the White North

Winter is nigh, the snow is high, and I don’t lie.
If you have a spare shovel we welcome you up here – not so much to dig us out of the snow, but to dig us out of this depression that we all seem to find ourselves in.
But I hope all you old scouts remember your training from Fr. Idlefonse and Fr. Cuthbert, “When you reach the end of the rope – tie a bowline and hang on.”
Fr. Adelbert would say, “When all else fails – try a prayer”.
My thought for the day is “Remember, the tide turns at low water, as well as
high!”.

Well, enough of Philosophy let us get onto some real news.

BRIEFS

Got a Christmas card from PETER TARR, T´dad, with greetings, and have written to get some more data on what he is doing and why. I played rugger with Peter for Trinidad back in the 60´s. That kind of dates us, don’t it¿¿
--------------------------------------------
I forgot to mention in the last Bull, that in Stanley´s Card he was trying to think a way to have some sort of a reunion. Possible?
He also gave me David de Castro’s address, and I wrote him – but no reply yet. Understand he plays the quarto still and can sing a mean Calypso. So we may bring him to Canada for the next “CARIBANA FESTIVAL”.
---------------------------------------------
DESMOND LITTLEPAGE, who has been in ABU DHABI for the last few years, will possibly be moving to Perth, Australia this year – so have sent him the address of Richard and Leary O´Connor and the other Kangaroos in that area. His comment of the Mid-East are: When it’s hot it’s hot (Weather and Politics); and there is a somewhat restricted quality of life (No booze), But the good points (money & money) outweigh the bad. He has also given me ROBERT ANDERSON´s address, and I wrote.
He is my first cousin and I never remember he was a Mountie. His sister is married and lives in St. Catherines, Ontario.

HAPINESS IS THE BY-PRODUCT OF TRUE LOVE.
-----------------------------------------
Got a long letter from STEVEN TEMPRO in Trinidad, with the news of Fr. Leo´s passing away (details further on). Steven was only added to the mailing list in December – so things are brightening up. Steven has progressed nicely, he used to work with me at Tugs & Lighters in the 70´s and managed the Southern Branch then. Steven says the Oil Business is slow in Trini, with Texaco’s rumoured closure, and George Weeks still raising Ol´Harry in the island. Steven passed on some news about LAURENCE MACCAULAY who runs his own business, but he did not pass on his address, (Please send), Also, MIKE AMES has left Texaco, and formed his own company (Machine Shop Work), and is building a home in Palmiste near Steven. Steven had a birthday on 4 February. Now 35 – Spring Chicken.
-----------------------------------------------
Hey, does anyone have DENNIS CRIBBES address? Is he still around?? The last contact I has was the Starlight Shopping Plaza – but his mail was returned and I would really like to keep him on our list. Also, very interesting in getting hold of ARTHUR DE BOULAY, (remember him).
---------------------------------------------------
It’s not in doing what you like but in liking what you do - That’s the secret of happiness.
---------------------------------------------------
I made contact with ESMOND LANGE, though his brother Alistair in Australia. He left Mount in 1958 and went to England, and so lost touch with a lot of the Old Boys. Esmond has worked for the Dowell Schlumberger since he left Trinidad, and is well
established in the Company. Has been to Argentina, Brazil, and Borneo and is now in Norway. Has just one daughter, Joanna (8).
He told me PHILIP SCOTT is in Aberdeen, and has given me his address so I will write. He looks extremely well in the photo he sent, but it does not photocopy well so I have left it out (sorry Esmond).
He also gave me the address of RAYMOND DE VERTEUIL who is in Texas.

HAVE YOU HUGGED YOUR KIDS LATELY; AND WIFE?

OBITUARIES

The news of people passing away is always sad, but it is what life is all about,
and if there is one thing certain – we will go one day.

LIFE IS FRAGILE – HANDLE IT WITH PRAYER

Some of our other priests who left us since my last news letter are:

Fr. Anselm, Fr. William and Fr. Bede.

Please remember them in your prayers. Just their names can trigger so many different feelings and memories of our younger days _ and c´est la vie.

CHURCH BUILDER DIES AT HOSPITAL

Father Leo van Leeuwen, OSB, died on Monday at the San Fernando General Hospital after a short illness.

Father Leo, 70, who was among the first Roman Catholic priests to have been trained at Mount St. Benedict will buried at the grounds of the Abbey today following a funeral service at the La Romain RC Church of which he was parish priest up to the time of his death.

Born in Holland, in July 1913, Father Leo came to Trinidad and Tobago at the request of the Abbot of Belgium. At that time, Mount St. Benedict was “recently established” and Father Leo was advised to study there by the Abbot and his first question then was:” where to find Trinidad”? He came and made a tremendous success of the opportunity, having become known throughout the archdioceses as the “builder of Churches”.

Today’s funeral services will be celebrated by Archbishop Pantin starting at 9:30am after which the body will be driven to Mt. St. Benedict to be buried on the grounds there.

HEARD ON THE STREET

Gordon Lang: (Colombia). His Daughter visited us and has been accepted into St. Mary´s University in Halifax. (There are many sons and daughters of old boys going there.) She will be starting in September.
---------------------------------------------------------------
Tommy Jardim: (Halifax) Bought a new tennis racquet so as to improve his game, let us all wish him “luck”. He and his wife Joan are going to Bahamas for a convention. I will report on his return.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Anthony Lucky: (Trinidad) He has been put up as a candidate for High Court Judge – can you believe how those old boys that used to “heckle” him, are trembling. He promises to write a letter for Ray de Cambra and get him to sign it. Says it’s the only way we will hear from him.
----------------------------------------------------------------
The real measure of our wealth is how much we would be worth if we lost all our money, think of it!
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Guys, we would really like to hear from:

ADRIAN ACHE – he has a son Andre at school in Toronto.
GORDON THAVENOT – who has his address?
RAYMNOD VIVIES – Know he is in Guadeloupe, asked Alain Lacour to trace.
CHARLES DEVAUX – Somewhere in St. Lucia
PETER DARWENT – In Iran – perhaps – want some war news.
STEVEN and RICHARD ANDERSON – They were heavily involved in Old Boys when I left.
BRO. FRANCIS ALLEYNE – Is he an old Boys?. Hear he has something to do with Gaspar Grande.
------------------------------------------------------------------
THINGS I LEARNED
------------------------------------------------------------------
HUGH HENDERSON has a daughter working in the “Gold” Dept. of the Bank.
Comment on the last bulletin – Gordon Lang looked like Dean Martin – from the Champagne down.
COLIN PHILIPS – was in Oshawa – has vanished – where?
---------------------------------------------------------
Val and I continue to suffer from Good Health and Happiness and would like to contact those old Boys who were at the marriage Encounter Caribbean week-end at the Mount; am just hoping we can spread the seed amongst all the old group – and later ones, without giving out any secrets – it is a crash course in communication for couples; that takes you far beyond any experience you could imagine – now try and imagine that one!
----------------------------------------------------------
FR: ADALBERT wrote to say ABBOT BERNARD is back at Mount and getting accustomed to more new changes in the building structure. With God’s grace he will have the strength to persevere and slip quietly back into the Community.
