Dear Friends,

To keep up a routine, here is the O.A.S.I.S. Bull No.5. Copied faithfully, the photographs are attached and I have included the names or notes for each of them, to make it easier to file away. Naturally I would like to get updated photos and the resume of each person mentioned.

Bull No.5

Greetings and Great Hallucinations from the White North

Winter is nigh, the snow is high, and I don’t lie.
If you have a spare shovel we welcome you up here – not so much to dig us out of the snow, but to dig us out of this depression that we all seem to find ourselves in.
But I hope all you old scouts remember your training from Fr. Idlefonse and Fr. Cuthbert, “When you reach the end of the rope – tie a bowline and hang on.”
Fr. Adelbert would say, “When all else fails – try a prayer”.
My thought for the day is “Remember, the tide turns at low water, as well as
high!”.
-------------------------------------------.
Well, enough of Philosophy let us get onto some real news.

BRIEFS

Got a Christmas card from PETER TARR, T´dad, with greetings, and have written to get some more data on what he is doing and why. I played rugger with Peter for Trinidad back in the 60´s. That kind of dates us, don’t it¿¿
--------------------------------------------
I forgot to mention in the last Bull, that in Stanley´s Card he was trying to think a way to have some sort of a reunion. Possible?
He also gave me David de Castro’s address, and I wrote him – but no reply yet. Understand he plays the quarto still and can sing a mean Calypso. So we may bring him to Canada for the next “CARIBANA FESTIVAL”.
---------------------------------------------
DESMOND LITTLEPAGE, who has been in ABU DHABI for the last few years, will possibly be moving to Perth, Australia this year – so have sent him the address of Richard and Leary O´Connor and the other Kangaroos in that area. His comment of the Mid-East are: When it’s hot it’s hot (Weather and Politics); and there is a somewhat restricted quality of life (No booze), But the good points (money & money) outweigh the bad. He has also given me ROBERT ANDERSON´s address, and I wrote.
He is my first cousin and I never remember he was a Mountie. His sister is married and lives in St. Catherines, Ontario.
-------------------------------------------
HAPINESS IS THE BY-PRODUCT OF TRUE LOVE.
-----------------------------------------
Got a long letter from STEVEN TEMPRO in Trinidad, with the news of Fr. Leo´s passing away (details further on). Steven was only added to the mailing list in December – so things are brightening up. Steven has progressed nicely, he used to work with me at Tugs & Lighters in the 70´s and managed the Southern Branch then. Steven says the Oil Business is slow in Trini, with Texaco’s rumoured closure, and George Weeks still raising Ol´Harry in the island. Steven passed on some news about LAURENCE MACCAULAY who runs his own business, but he did not pass on his address, (Please send), Also, MIKE AMES has left Texaco, and formed his own company (Machine Shop Work), and is building a home in Palmiste near Steven. Steven had a birthday on 4 February. Now 35 – Spring Chicken.
-----------------------------------------------
Hey, does anyone have DENNIS CRIBBES address? Is he still around?? The last contact I has was the Starlight Shopping Plaza – but his mail was returned and I would really like to keep him on our list. Also, very interesting in getting hold of ARTHUR DE BOULAY, (remember him).
---------------------------------------------------
It’s not in doing what you like but in liking what you do - That’s the secret of happiness.
---------------------------------------------------
I made contact with ESMOND LANGE, though his brother Alistair in Australia. He left Mount in 1958 and went to England, and so lost touch with a lot of the Old Boys. Esmond has worked for the Dowell Schlumberger since he left Trinidad, and is well
established in the Company. Has been to Argentina, Brazil, and Borneo and is now in Norway. Has just one daughter, Joanna (8).
He told me PHILIP SCOTT is in Aberdeen, and has given me his address so I will write. He looks extremely well in the photo he sent, but it does not photocopy well so I have left it out (sorry Esmond).
He also gave me the address of RAYMOND DE VERTEUIL who is in Texas.
--------------------------------------------------------
HAVE YOU HUGGED YOUR KIDS LATELY; AND WIFE?
---------------------------------------------------------
OBITUARIES

The news of people passing away is always sad, but it is what life is all about,
and if there is one thing certain – we will go one day.

LIFE IS FRAGILE – HANDLE IT WITH PRAYER

Some of our other priests who left us since my last news letter are:

Fr. Anselm, Fr. William and Fr. Bede.

Please remember them in your prayers. Just their names can trigger so many different feelings and memories of our younger days _ and c´est la vie.

CHURCH BUILDER DIES AT HOSPITAL

Father Leo van Leeuwen, OSB, died on Monday at the San Fernando General Hospital after a short illness.

Father Leo, 70, who was among the first Roman Catholic priests to have been trained at Mount St. Benedict will buried at the grounds of the Abbey today following a funeral service at the La Romain RC Church of which he was parish priest up to the time of his death.

Born in Holland, in July 1913, Father Leo came to Trinidad and Tobago at the request of the Abbot of Belgium. At that time, Mount St. Benedict was “recently established” and Father Leo was advised to study there by the Abbot and his first question then was:” where to find Trinidad”? He came and made a tremendous success of the opportunity, having become known throughout the archdioceses as the “builder of Churches”.

Today’s funeral services will be celebrated by Archbishop Pantin starting at 9:30am after which the body will be driven to Mt. St. Benedict to be buried on the grounds there.

HEARD ON THE STREET

Gordon Lang: (Colombia). His Daughter visited us and has been accepted into St. Mary´s University in Halifax. (There are many sons and daughters of old boys going there.) She will be starting in September.
---------------------------------------------------------------
Tommy Jardim: (Halifax) Bought a new tennis racquet so as to improve his game, let us all wish him “luck”. He and his wife Joan are going to Bahamas for a convention. I will report on his return.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Anthony Lucky: (Trinidad) He has been put up as a candidate for High Court Judge – can you believe how those old boys that used to “heckle” him, are trembling. He promises to write a letter for Ray de Cambra and get him to sign it. Says it’s the only way we will hear from him.
----------------------------------------------------------------
The real measure of our wealth is how much we would be worth if we lost all our money, think of it!
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Guys, we would really like to hear from:

ADRIAN ACHE – he has a son Andre at school in Toronto.
GORDON THAVENOT – who has his address?
RAYMNOD VIVIES – Know he is in Guadeloupe, asked Alain Lacour to trace.
CHARLES DEVAUX – Somewhere in St. Lucia
PETER DARWENT – In Iran – perhaps – want some war news.
STEVEN and RICHARD ANDERSON – They were heavily involved in Old Boys when I left.
BRO. FRANCIS ALLEYNE – Is he an old Boys?. Hear he has something to do with Gaspar Grande.
------------------------------------------------------------------
THINGS I LEARNED
------------------------------------------------------------------
HUGH HENDERSON has a daughter working in the “Gold” Dept. of the Bank.
Comment on the last bulletin – Gordon Lang looked like Dean Martin – from the Champagne down.
COLIN PHILIPS – was in Oshawa – has vanished – where?
---------------------------------------------------------
Val and I continue to suffer from Good Health and Happiness and would like to contact those old Boys who were at the marriage Encounter Caribbean week-end at the Mount; am just hoping we can spread the seed amongst all the old group – and later ones, without giving out any secrets – it is a crash course in communication for couples; that takes you far beyond any experience you could imagine – now try and imagine that one!
----------------------------------------------------------
FR: ADALBERT wrote to say ABBOT BERNARD is back at Mount and getting accustomed to more new changes in the building structure. With God’s grace he will have the strength to persevere and slip quietly back into the Community.
